Rolls-Royce Ghost could go hybrid sooner rather than later

... and it goes into production next year. AutoCar is now reporting that the Rolls engineers are working on a hybrid version of the Ghost using BMW's mild hybrid system. The mild hybrid is getting its first application in a BMW right about now in the new ActiveHybrid 7. The Ghost shares most of its platform with the new 7-series, so installing the electric assist should be a no-brainer. The Ghost hybrid will forget all about the traditional alternator and the engine will be started by the 20kW electric motor.
Same as the numbers announced for the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, the fuel consumption will be improved by around 15 percent.
No word on when the Rolls Royce Ghost hybrid will be available, but we expect the development and testing process to last a few more years.

While this won’t drastically improve the eco rating of the Ghost, Rolls Royce’s effort should be applauded. Hopefully these endeavors will continue into the future and we’ll see some more initiatives.
